Alistair Headley

Dr Headley surveying in Teesdale

I started off bird-watching in my youth, then moved on to plants long before starting a degree course in botany. I have over 15 years experience in ecological consultancy as well as over 20 years experience of teaching and research in British universities, including 13 years as a lecturer in Environmental Science at the University of Bradford. This included research work in northern Sweden, Norway, Spitzbergen, Portugal and Spain as well as across many sites in the British Isles. I also have experience of working as a Principal Ecologist in a large multi-national environmental consultancy (Grontmij now Sweco).

With a strong physiological-ecology and geochemical research background at the Universities of Manchester and Sheffield, I have been able to advise on the likely ecological impacts of gaseous and aqueous emissions on various habitats. Working with Professors Mike Ashmore and Mark Seaward, I was able to relate the changes in the distribution of certain lichen species across Britain to the changing patterns of nitrogen deposition.

I have many years experience investigating the impacts of land management on blanket bogs and on the restoration of peatland communities on cut-over peatlands. This experience has resulted in me acting as expert witness at a public inquiry for a windfarm development in the South Pennines, as well as contributing to a Natural England report on the impacts of wind farms on blanket bog habitats.
